National High School Rodeo Finals Everything you need to know

The National High School Rodeo Event is organized by the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA). The organization is based in Denver, Colorado. NHSRA was founded in 1961 and was intended to promote an undying interest in rodeo sports among the teens. As such, the event target only high school students. This is something that the event does until today. More importantly, the National High School Rodeo Finals also provides training and establishes venues for the main NHSRA Finals performances.

The first event was organized in 1947. It was a single event known as the Texas (National Championship High School Rodeo Association). Today the event hosts much more than just specific high schools. It has grown bigger and now includes local organizations within almost every state in the USA, Canada, Mexico, and also Australia.
The NHSRA today has about 12,000 members and, more importantly, sanctions close to 1,800 rodeos annually. How Often is the Event Held? Today, the NHSRA holds the NHSRA Finals event every year. They will change locations every two years.

About the High School Division

High School Rodeo Girls Events 

For the girls, NHSRA has prepared several events. These events include the following categories for the girls:

  • All-around cowgirl
  • Girls cutting horse
  • Breakaway roping
  • Goat tying
  • Barrel racing
  • Pole bending
  • Rodeo queen
  • Team roping
  • Working cow horse

High School Rodeo Boys Events

Like the girls, the boys also have their own event categories. The categories include the following events.

  • All-around cowboy
  • Steer wrestling
  • Tie-down (calf) roping
  • Bareback riding
  • Bull riding
  • Team roping
  • Saddle bronc riding
  • Boys cutting horse
  • Working cow horse

The only coed event in these two categories is the team roping event. They can’t take rest during Rodeo.

About Junior High Division

Apart from the main, events for the high school students which we have seen above, the NHSRA also provides a similar service to the junior high school-aged students. However, in this category, there is a wide range of events that are unique to this junior high division. There is also a rodeo called Junior World Finals Rodeo. High school students can join this rodeo

The events are equally divided among girls and boys and include the following categories among several other categories. The boy’s chute dogging, and the boys breakaway roping. There is also the goat tying event for the boys. The best thing about the Junior division is that it showcases the only event that has to have one girl and one boy, which is the ribbon roping.

NHSRA Scholarships and Membership

There are several requirements for the membership and the scholarships of the NHSRA. They include the following:

  • First, the student must be very disciplined. They shouldn’t be ruled undesirable for bad behavior in school.
  • The student must be under the age of 20 by the first of the National High School Rodeo year.
  • The student must have enrolled in their 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade (the year that precedes the National Rodeo year).
  • At last, The student has made passing grades in at least 4 subjects.

Conclusion

Normally, every state or province can adopt its own state/province academic policies for grading or crediting the participants. As such, any student that attends the schools which will apply to the high school credits then becomes eligible so long as they meet all the requirements.
